Across Africa and Nigeria especially, the lifestyle of celebrities and super stars from Hollywood, entertainment, sports and other famous people from around the world are perceived to be of living lifestyles full off blings, expensive champagne drinking, expensive designer clothes and jewelleries, high powered fast and luxurious cars, expensive yatches, private Jets ownerships and expensive and exotic holidays all around the world, Ownership of multi-million Dollar/Pounds/Euro homes and beautiful ladies and lasses surrounding them and off course the enjoyment of all finest things in life and off course for the ladies the diva lifestyles that portends them to be different from the average Joe, due to the ridiculousness of the things they do sometimes. These perception and views may be true to a certain extent, at least this is what we see mostly on the pages of the gossip newspapers and magazine and some entertainment and celebrity centred TV stations and shows all around us.
For our Nigerian and African celebrities and wanna be celebrities however, these are the type of lifestyles they seem to aspire to live or mimic to live. This is evidenced by the way some celebrities from this clime try so hard to copy verbatim the attitude of this other celebrities from around the world, most especially in the music, entertainment and the film industries. We can say this because this is what we tend to see from the way most of our Nigerian and African celebrities behave. I am very sure you must have come across or heard one Nigerian Musician, or Nollywood actor/actress trying so hard albeit woefully, speaking with one fake British or American accent here and there just to impress or to be cool or whatever.
Forget the blings and the divalicious lifestyle, there however, is a side to some of this worlds super famous and rich celebrities that is humane, impressive and worthy of commendation and emulation.
Many celebrities, many will be surprised to know actually use their fame and money in so many laudable and positive ways, these includes but not limited to poverty alleviation, safe world & clean planet Initiatives, medical research funding, provision of free housing and education, etc. Some of the acts of kindness of some celebrities will actually amaze and shock you into humility and bewilderment.
In Nigeria and Africa however, while there has been news of some celebrities using their wealth and fame for a good course, majority of our Africa/Nigeria celebrities use their fame and money for the worst kind of living and social annihilation.
This article intends to highlight some of the positive things some celebrities from around the world are doing with a view and hope that it will spur and encourage some of our celebrities to actually understand that the opportunity they have gotten should be used more positively for societal good and the good of mankind. Note: this does not neccesarilly mean that there are no celebrities doing good from Nigeria/Africa. there are but we will be right to say that they are in a very small minority and we would hope to see this change. As world over celebrities have been at the forefront of innovation, social justice, eradicatio of powerty and other social ills.
Below are some of these extraordinary acts of kindness as done by celebrities and famously rich people from all around the world.
Rapper & Entrepreneur Sean"P.Diddy" Combs.
Do not let the Bad Boy image of the Bad Boy Records Music Mogul and entrepreneur fool you. P.Diddy is all about education and youths empowerment. In 2016, the 47-year-old Sean Combs announced that he would be opening Capital Preparatory Charter School in Harlem. The music mogul had quietly worked on the project with Dr. Steve Perry, founder of the Capital Prep Magnet School in Hartford, Connecticut, since 2010 in order to come up with the best structure possible. The school opened to grades 6-12, and offer free college preparatory classes to normally marginalized and low-income students. According to the schools official website, Capital Prep Harlem is to provide a ‘year-round, college preparatory education’ and will initially take on 170 students before building up to 700.
Similarly in the same year 2016, P.Diddy equally donated $1 million to his alma mater, Howard University, to establish the Sean Combs Scholarship Fund. The Bad Boy boss made the announcement of the gift on Sept 22, 2016 during a Washington, D.C. stop on the Bad Boy Family reunion tour.
Well they say appearance and looks can be deceiving right? Welldone Mr Combs For preparing the leaders and innovators of tomorrow.

The Batman Super star Ben Affleck In 1998, became pretty close friends with a 10-year-old Joe Kindregan who came to watch the on location shooting of his then romantic comedy movie with actress Sandra Bullock. Young Joe Kindgregan however, was wheelchair bound and suffered from the degenerative disease ataxia-telangiectasia. The movie star quickly started looking for cures for this disease including throwing Millions of dollars to fund research to find cure for the disease. Inspirational isnt it? It did not end there, the actor made Joe to come to the set of every single of his movie irrespective of where it is in the world from that day they met in 1998 until Joe, who sadly passed away in 2015, though he outlived his prognosis with over a decade thanks to Ben Affleck.
In 2009, Ben founded Eastern Congo Initiative (ECI), a grant-making and advocacy organization focused on investing in and working with the people of eastern Congo. ECI believes that local, community-based approaches are essential to creating a sustainable and successful society in eastern Congo, and works to increase the quality and quantity of investments in the region.
Mr & Mrs Carter (Jay Z & Beyonce)
America’s Golden couple Mr and Mrs Carter famously known as Jayz and Beyonce keeps their charitable work under the radar, but you know what they say, a big fish can never hide under the water.
The Carter’s charitable activities are too numerous to list, but we would try our best to list a few:
Haiti's earthquake recovery efforts: Beyonce travelled to the devated island personally alongside Valeria Amos, the United Nations' humanitarian affairs chairwoman, met residents who were still recovering and was able to see firsthand all of the work that still needs to be done. She donated $2M earned from a private concert to Haiti and later her and her husband Jay Z Donated $15m toward bolt foundation for rebuilding of Haiti.
#BlackLivesMatter movement: Jay Z had bailed out dozens of Baltimore protestors. Writer and activist Dream Hampton, revealed in a tweet. "We needed money for bail for Baltimore protestors, I… hit Jay up, and I had for Ferguson, and he wired tens of thousands of dollars within minutes,".
Beyonce's BeyGood Foundation: Touching everything from the unemployed to the sick, BeyGood foundation aims to make the world a more beautiful place. Her new initiative is currently raising money for the thousands in Nepal who were affected by the recent 7.8 magnitude earthquake. The superstar raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to fight for gender equality worldwide, given school supplies to students across the nation and hosted food drives in Houston.
Jay Z's Trust Fund for Sean Bell's Children: Jay Z established a trust fund for Bell's two children. The undisclosed amount of money is enough to fund the children's college, should they choose to attend.
Jay Z's Shawn Carter Foundation: Aimed at providing scholarship opportunities for disadvantaged youths and communities. The fund has paid out nearly $3 million in scholarship funds, study abroad opportunities, counseling programs and college visits.
Jay Z's Push for Criminal Justice Reform: The New York native returned to his Brooklyn roots in December after a grand jury declined to indict the officer responsible for the fatal chokehold that killed Eric Garner in July 2014. Jay sat down with Gov. Andrew Cuomo to discuss reforming the criminal justice system. The rapper urged lawmakers to do a full examination of the broken system. He is currently embarked on many publicty outreach for social justice.
Now that is what we call the real golden couple, who are also using there blessings to bless others and have an equitable just world, welldone the Carters. Hope we will see your philantropic activities bringing into pursuing a cause for Africa and Africans soon?
Boxer Manny Pacquiao.
The Philipine Boxer turned legislator is a small man with big power and even a bigger heart. His charitable prowes will have you in tears. The boxer donated £40 million pounds, half of his £80M earnings from his 2015 fight with world champion Floyd Mayweather. Pacquiao lost the fight to the then 38-year-old Mayweather on points in a bout which fell well below its preordained tag as ‘the fight of the century’.
The Boxer and his wife Jinkee also created a charity called Emmanuel & Jinkee's Heart Foundation, located in General Santos City, Philippines. Over the years, the foundation has helped with things like educational needs, homelessness, and medical outreach.The Boxer was also reported to have paid for 1000 units of houses to be built for the poor in his hometown.
“I’m so happy giving these houses free to my constituents in the Sarangani Province from my own pocket – more than thousand families are the beneficiaries,” he posted on Facebook.
There are hundreds of stories of celebritites doing extra ordinary things that we would not have space and time to list all of them here. this includes Musicians, Football Players, Movie stars, Basketball players, Tenis stars, Rugby Stars, and many other celebrities embarking of activities that moves mankin forward by their acts of kindness.
However the purpose of this article is to highlight what is obtaninable and how we can emulate the best of best practices and attitudes worldwide. Currently the opposite seem to be the case for Nigerians celebrities expecially, from the way they leave, eat and dress, act, carry themsleves and how we treat each other as a people, we tend to emulate the worst kind of any of this practices and sadly when we do, we outdo those that we copied from.
To our celebreties and the wanna be celebritieis as you can see, though pockets are not same but you can begin to use the opportunity that you have for the good of the society and mankind.
Life is not all about blings and champagnes, please by all means do enjoy yourself, you worked hard for it and deserve it but please remember that you are blessed to be a blessing to others and a light to our increasingly darkening world and society.
